Free the Five Cuban Heroes

Who are the 5 U.S.-Held Cuban Political Prisoners?

The 5 heroes are Cuban men—Rene Gonzalez Sehwerert, Ramon Labanino Salazar, Fernando Gonzalez Llort, Antonio Guerrero Rodriguez, and Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo—who were convicted June 2001 and in December received very severe sentences, including life sentences. What was their crime? They defended their country of Cuba from terrorists based in Miami. They have spent 17 months in solitary confinement in Security Housing Units, where they remain.

The five were convicted after a politically charged trial in which the U.S. government claimed they were engaging in espionage against U.S. military bases and threatening "national security." As the Five maintained in their defense, they were strictly involved in monitoring the actions of the Miami-based right-wing groups. In fact, they shared information with U.S. officials when the terrorist groups they infiltrated planned dangerous actions.

In December, the five compañeros were sentenced. Gerardo Hernandez was given the harshest sentence: two life terms and 80 months. Labanino and Antonio Guerrero both received life sentences. Rene Gonzalez received 15 years and Fernando Gonzalez received 19 years in prison.

While the Bush administration is carrying out a so-called war on terrorism, these brothers were fighting real terrorism. Their reward is to languish in Florida jails.

A national committee has been formed to organize for the freedom of these compañeros.  You can help.  Every two weeks on Thursdays at 6:30 pm, the National Committee to Free the Five meets. The next meeting will take up plans for a citywide meeting to demand freedom for all U.S. political prisoners as well as to launch a National Petition Campaign to Free the Miami Five.
