35th Brigade Arrives in Santiago!
5 Jul, 2004--The 34th Anniversary Contingent of the Venceremos Brigade has arrived safely in Santiago de Cuba to begin their two-week stay of work, travel and meetings in Cuba!
This contingent of eighty members will work in rehabbing buildings in the area of Santiago de Cuba and staying in the Abel Santamaria School. They will then cross the country and sepnd their last week working and meeting in Havana.
There were no problems or delays crossing the border into Canada.
The Brigade will return walking over the International Peace Bridge from Ft. Erie, Ontario into Buffalo, NY, USA on Monday morning July 19. There will be a welcom meeting organized by the Canadian Cuba Friendship Association at Mather Gate in Fort Erie at 8:00am and the Brigade and their supporters will begin walking over the Bridge at 8:30 am. They will cross into the US with banners proclaiming the right to travel to Cuba with US goverbnment "license"-- this is the "Travel Challenge". They will be accompanied by members of the African Awareness Association Freedom Ride, which will have also spent two weeks of unlicensed travel to in Cuba.
On the Buffalo side there will be a welcome gathering organized in Front Park, with food, speakers and music.
Anyone interested in traveling from the NYC area to Buffalo to greet the Brigade's return -- or to join Brigade members in Ft. Erie to walk over the Bridge as part of the Travel Challenge -- should contact the International Action Center (IAC) at 212-633-6646 to sign up for a bus. (Whether or not a bus will go will depend on demand.)
Please be ready to be part of a support system for the Travel Challengers in the event that they are detained or harassed at the US border!
