Demonstration & Public Forum to demand: FREE THE CUBAN FIVE FROM U.S. PRISONS!

For a complete description, download a PDF color flyer from

In light of several recent developments, this is a crucial time to demand freedom for the Five heroes being unjustly held in U.S. prisons. September marks the 8th year of their imprisonment, despite the overwhelming evidence and repeated rulings pointing to their innocence of the charges against them.

The Cuban Five were involved in monitoring the actions of Miami-based terrorist groups, in order to prevent terrorist attacks on their country of Cuba. Such attacks included, most notably, the bombing of a Cubana airline in 1976, killing 73 people, and numerous bombings of hotels and tourist areas in Havana in the 1990s.

The Five were falsely accused by the U.S. government of committing espionage conspiracy against the United States, and other related charges. They remain in prison despite an August 2005 ruling by a 3-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals that overturned the convictions ordered a new trial with a change of venue.

Despite that legal victory, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals issued its en banc decision denying a new trial to the Cuban Five just last month.

This was followed by the recent news related to the case of the Five. On Sept. 7, the Miami Herald disclosed that at least 10 Florida journalists have been paid by the U.S. government since 2001 to write news stories and commentary against Cuba and the Cuban government. On Sept. 11, a federal magistrate in Texas recommended that Cuban exile militant Luis Posada Carriles be released from custody. Posada Carriles was one of the masterminds of the 1976 bombing and many other terrorist attacks -- precisely the types of attacks that the Five had been working to prevent.

These recent developments make it all the more important for the progressive movement in the country to show solidarity with the Five at this moment.

We call on you to participate in the 2 actions planned for Sept. 23rd in Washington, DC: an 11 am march at the Justice Department, and 2 pm Public Forum at George Washington University.
