If you care about Cuba... if you care about justice... if you care about exposing Bush's so-called "War on Terror"... then rally in NYC to free the Cuban Five!

MONDAY APRIL 7 @ 12 NOON RALLY TO FREE THE CUBAN FIVE MANHATTAN FEDERAL BLDG 26 FEDERAL PLAZA

Who are the Cuban Five? They are five Cubans who were trying to stop the ultra-right terrorist groups in Miami from carrying out violent actions against the people of Cuba.

The Cuban people have been targets of U.S. policy, including a 43-year economic blockade designed to punish a whole people who chose a different road to build their society. They are victims of terror attacks by the Miami-based mafia, many of whom came from the wealthy class that left Cuba after the popular overthrow of dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, René González and Fernando González, acting in defense of their people, were living in Miami, monitoring these terrorist groups to prevent future violence.

But because the U.S. government — through the CIA — has been instrumental in funding, training and arming the ultra-right Miami mafia, the FBI targeted the five Cubans instead of arresting the terrorists.

This is the only reason that the five Cubans are in prison. They were framed up in a political witchhunt and railroaded by the U.S. in a 7-month trial in Miami, where it was impossible for them to have a fair trial.

Falsely charged with espionage on the U.S., in reality the five men’s mission was to follow the activities of the right-wing. After their arrest in September 1998, they were convicted June 8, 2001 and sentenced December 2001, from 17 years to life. (For a full analysis of the case, see: www.freethefive.org/whoare.cfm#analysis0103)

NEW CRISIS DEVELOPS: In early March, Gerardo, Antonio, Ramón, Fernando and René were suddenly put into solitary confinement in their respective prisons, where they still are, suffering severe conditions and denied elementary rights. They are prohibited from contact with their families and friends, denied reading or writing material, and are greatly restricted from attorney visits. We ask people to call Attorney General John Ashcroft at 202-353-1555 or e-mail: AskDOJ@usdoj.gov and urge their immediate release from “the hole.”

An international campaign has been launched to win freedom for the Cuban Five. This coming April, their appeals will be filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta. Already 17 countries from around the world have pledged to make the first week in April a week of international solidarity with the five.

Join community activists, religious and labor leaders, and people just like you on Monday, April 7th to stand in solidarity with these brave young men.
