March 11, 2016, Chicago: Youth celebrate the cancellation of Trump’s campaign rally

Inspired by the righteous peoples’ shutdowns of Trump speaking engagements in Chicago and Cincinnati, New Yorkers with the Black Lives Matter movement, migrant rights groups and others intend to shut down Trump’s incitement of racist violence in New York. Groups have announced plans to take over Trump’s hateful message with protest actions outside the hotel, inside the Grand Central Hyatt complex and throughout the surrounding areas.Starting at various points in the city, forces mobilizing to stop Trump’s message include the newly victorious Fight for $15, who will not only conduct a one-day walkout that day but also march on the Hyatt that night. “This is HUGE” reads the Fight for $15 website.

Other feeder marches and actions include: Stand Up for Racial Justice, gathering at 4:30 PM in Bryant Park; We Will Not Be Silent, gathering at 5:00 PM at Grand Central Clock; Women & Queer Contingent, gathering at 5:00 PM at the New York Central Library (42nd & 5th); and more.

“Trump’s rhetoric is an instigation to racist, anti-migrant and misogynist violence,” said Kalisa Moore with Peoples Power Assembly, one of the groups with the Stop Trump Coalition. “As a matter of self-defense and protection of New Yorkers, we intend to do what the city’s elected so-called leaders refuse to do — and shut down Trump from spreading his hateful message.”

Members of the Shut Down Trump Coalition — including students, Muslim groups, migrants’ rights groups and members of New York’s Black Lives Matter movement — will hold a press conference on Monday, 12 noon, April 11 in front of the Grand Hyatt where Trump is scheduled to speak on Thursday, April 14 at the Republican $1,000-a-person fundraising dinner.

“On the morning of April 14, a judge is scheduled to reverse course and give no jail time to NYPD member Peter Liang, who killed Akai Gurley and refused to give him CPR,” Moore continued. “Just as we will join the protests at Liang’s sentencing that morning, we will act to shut down Trump’s message that night. We have been fightng to stop killings of Black and Brown people. Giving Trump unchallenged high-profile platforms to spread bigotry causes racist attacks and arson against mosques.”

“We’re on the side of the people. Trump is on the side of racist terror.”

The call to Shut Down Trump is a popular one. Multiple Facebook event pages have been created calling for actions against Trump on April 14 — with over 2,000 people marked “Going” to the one titled “Shut Down Trump in NYC.” That number increases by an average of 100 a day.
