The Shut Down Trump and the RNC Rally and March is scheduled for Sunday, July 17 at 4pm – on the eve of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
The march will commence at the close of the People’s Convention for Peace and Justice and make a stop at the Quicken Loans arena, the site of the Republican National Convention. The sharp political slogans will provide a strong response to Trump’s program of racism, Islamophobia, attacks on Immigrants and on LGBTQ people and his efforts to sow division among poor and working people.
The Shut Down Trump march is linking the role of the Cleveland Police Department’s racist murders that have been a focus of the Black Lives Matter Movement, the planned restrictions of civil rights of protesters during the Convention and the reactionary national climate. Thousands of resisters to the Trump message are expected in Cleveland during the days leading up to and during the national Convention. Cars buses and vans are expected from t the Midwest, East Coast and even further away.
There is widespread outrage, locally and around the country, over the invasion of Cleveland by Trump’s army of haters. For these forces to hold their convention in Cleveland, a symbol of racist police violence, is an affront to the families of Tamir Rice, Tanisha Anderson, Malissa Williams and Timothy Russell, victims of police killings – and to the whole Black Lives Matter movement. On top of that, a consent decree with the Department of Justice, which found in the Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) a pattern of excessive use of force, has been lifted for the purpose of maintaining “order” during the four days of the RNC.
The coalition of forces sponsoring the Sunday march is urging support and unity for all the resistance actions protesting Trump and the RNC before and during the RNC. This is the way to combat the dangerous Trump candidacy as well as the increasing racism and repression of the capitalist state machine.
