NYC – Thurs. April 13: Protest U.S. Militarism in the Pacific: Korean Villagers Struggle Against THAAD

April 13 at 6:30 pm
NYU, King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (KJCC)
53 Washington Square South
New York, NY 10012

In the midst of political upheaval in South Korea, North Korea’s nuclear program, and uncertainty about Trump’s policy in Northeast Asia, citizens in Seongju and Gimcheon, South Korea, have been rallying and holding candlelight vigils for the past 8 months against the installation of a U.S. missile defense system (THAAD) in their region.

The U.S. and South Korea claim THAAD is necessary to defend against North Korean ballistic missiles but locals fear its environmental effects, claim its real target is China, and believe it makes them ground zero for counterattacks.

Why is this happening?
What is THAAD?

Learn about this struggle from the front line activism of Mrs. Sounghey Kim, a leader in the citizen’s resistance leadership, and other speakers on the broader global context that underlies this latest conflict.

Speakers:

  • Mrs. Sounghey Kim, Co-chair of the Seongju Residents Committee to  Stop THAAD
  • Professor Monica Kim, Assistant Professor,
Department of History, New  York University
  • Betsy Yoon, of Nodutdol, a member of the Task Force
to Stop THAAD in  Korea and Militarism in Asian and the
Pacific Solidarity Committee for  Democracy and Peace in Korea.

This National Tour is sponsored by Task Force to Stop THAAD in Korea and Militarism in Asian and the  Pacific, with support from Korea Policy Institute, Channing and Popai Liem Education Foundation, and  Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space.

This New York event is being cosponsored by Nodutdol for Korean Community Development, the NYU Department of History and the A/P/A Institute, Bayan USA, Vets for Peace, NYC Chapter 34, Granny Peace Brigade, and International Action Center.
