SHUT IT DOWN

All Out for May Day 2017 in Union Square!

Strike to Defend Migrants, Refugees, and All Workers!

NEW YORK– As the Trump administration increases raids and deportations of immigrant workers and militarized police violence against black and brown communities, it also escalates war and militarism overseas at the expense of US taxpayers to the tune of $639 billion. Impacted communities will unite and rally once again this coming May Day– International Workers Day– at Union Square to resist Trump’s policies and call for a strike to defend all refugees, migrants, and all workers. Join us for a pre-rally press conference at Union Square with the rally organizers.

WHAT: Press Conference to Announce May Day March and Rally vs. Trump

WHEN: Tuesday, April 25, 12noon

WHERE: South steps of Union Square

WHO: Rally/March conveners include International League of Peoples Struggle, Shut It Down NYC, and Peoples Power Assembly

Background: Immigrant workers resisting repressive legislation resurrected May Day in the US back in 2006, including one of the largest outdoor demonstrations in New York City history at Union Square. The massive demonstrations across the US effectively led to the neutralization of House Resolution 4437 aka the Sensenbrenner Bill.

This year’s May Day demonstration will focus on the Trump administration and the continuing criminalization and repression of migrant workers, refugees, workers, and poor people of color. It will also condemn the additional $54 billion of US funds funneled to the US military-industrial complex to launch war efforts in Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq and elsewhere, and demand that billions in tax dollars be redirected to job creation, healthcare, education, and other social services.
