On Anniversary of Murder of Heather Heyer and First Court Date for Durham Activists, Week of Actions Called Against White Supremacy

Durham, NC – An informal alliance of national, regional and local organizations are pulling together a national call for a coordinated week of actions to topple white supremacy and state repression from Sept. 11-17, in the wake of events in Durham and Charlottesville. Throughout the week, groups across the country will hold actions in their cities.

Tuesday, Sept. 12, will be the first court date for activists who allegedly toppled a Confederate statue in Durham, as well as the one-month anniversary of the righteous resistance to white supremacists in Charlottesville and the murder of anti-fascist protester Heather Heyer there. A major demonstration will take place in Durham, NC, that morning that will draw many from surrounding cities.

“I am headed to Durham to pack the court and show up for our freedom fighters! What Takiyah Thompson and the rest of the arrestees did was a public service and they should be applauded, not slapped with criminal charges,” said Archie Collier, who is traveling from Baltimore to attend the action on September 12 in Durham with a delegation from the Baltimore Bus Riders Union, Workers World Party, and other groups.

In Durham, Sheriff Mike Andrews has been attempting to intimidate the movement by targeting activists allegedly involved in toppling the statue on Aug. 14, and others involved in protesting at a planned Ku Klux Klan rally on Aug. 18. Fourteen activists have been arrested and charged numerous felonies and misdemeanors. Court dates for these activists will be held on Sept. 12 and Oct. 11.

“Actions across the country have shown that now, more than ever, is the time to take bold and courageous action. We must act now to counter the rise and emboldening of white supremacists in our communities and in the state,” said Loan Tran, one of the anti-racist activists arrested in connection with the monument toppling. “The struggle against white supremacy in all its forms is just! The events in Charlottesville, followed by the action in Durham that toppled the Confederate monument, are part of a growing movement to combat some of the most heinous, racist sections of the far right that have been emboldened by Trump. We are fighting white supremacy in all its forms: Confederate monuments, the school to prison pipeline, the attacks on DACA and deportations of immigrants, police brutality, the prison system, and more.”

Many cities across the country have taken down Confederate monuments in the weeks since the events in Charlottesville and Durham. In Los Angeles, indigenous people won a victory when the city changed Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day.

But activists say that this is not because of these politicians’ good will, but rather because of their fear of the movement against white supremacy.

“These politicians have had plenty of opportunity to ‘do the right thing,’ but they’re only doing anything now because they fear rebellion and the strength of a united, multinational movement,” stated Jess Jude, one of eleven activists arrested after the Confederate monument was removed by the community. “And we see that Trump is continuing his bellicose attacks on our movement, including the egregious pardoning of arch-racist Sheriff Joe Arpaio along with his support for white supremacist attacks in Charlottesville, providing an opening for the witchhunt by the Durham sheriff against anti-racist activists, no matter their diverse political ideas, and for attacks from the far right. The days of action from September 11-17, both in Durham and around the country, will continue the march forward to tear down white supremacy in all its terrorist forms.”

En el Aniversario del Asesinato de Heather Heyer y Primera Fecha de Corte para Activistas de Durham, Semana de Acciones Llamada contra Supremacía Blanca

Durham, Carolina del Norte - Una alianza informal de organizaciones nacionales, regionales y locales están organizando una Semana Coordinada Nacional de Acción del 11 al 17 de septiembre, para derrocar la supremacía blanca y la represión estatal tras los eventos en Durham y Charlottesville. A lo largo de la semana, grupos de todo el país realizarán acciones en sus ciudades.

El martes 12 de septiembre será la primera cita judicial para activistas que supuestamente derrocaron una estatua confederada en Durham, así como el aniversario de un mes de la justa resistencia a los supremacistas blancos en Charlottesville y el asesinato de la manifestante antifascista Heather Heyer ahí. Una demostración importante tendrá lugar en Durham, Carolina del Norte, esa mañana atraerá a muchos de las ciudades de los alrededores.

"Voy a ir a Durham para llenar la corte y presentarme a nuestros luchadores por la libertad ... Lo que Takiyah Thompson y el resto de los arrestados hicieron, era un servicio público y deberían ser aplaudidos, no abofeteados con cargos criminales", dijo Archie Collier, quien está viajando desde Baltimore para asistir a la acción el 12 de septiembre en Durham con una delegación del sindicato de pasajeros de autobuses de Baltimore, Workers World Party y otros grupos.

En Durham, el Sheriff Mike Andrews ha estado tratando de intimidar al movimiento atacando a activistas presuntamente implicados en derribar la estatua el 14 de agosto y otros involucrados en protestar en un rally planeado del Ku Klux Klan el 18 de agosto. Catorce activistas han sido arrestados y acusado de numerosos delitos y faltas. Las fechas de corte para estos activistas se llevarán a cabo el 12 de septiembre y el 11 de octubre.

"Acciones en todo el país han demostrado que ahora, más que nunca, es el momento de tomar acciones valientes. Debemos actuar ahora para contrarrestar el ascenso y el envalentonamiento de los supremacistas blancos en nuestras comunidades y en el estado ", dijo Loan Tran, un activista antiracistas arrestado en relación con el derrumbamiento del monumento. ¡La lucha contra la supremacía blanca en todas sus formas es justa! Los acontecimientos en Charlottesville, seguidos por la acción en Durham que derrumbó el monumento confederado, son parte de un movimiento cada vez mayor para combatir algunas de las secciones racistas más odiosas de la extrema derecha que han sido envalentonadas por Trump. Muchas ciudades de todo el país han derribado monumentos confederados en las semanas transcurridas desde los eventos en Charlottesville y Durham.  En Los Angeles, el pueblo indigena gano una victoria cuando la ciudad cambio el dia de Columbus en Octubre al Dia Indigena.

Pero los activistas dicen que esto no es debido a la buena voluntad de estos políticos, sino más bien por su miedo al movimiento contra la supremacía blanca.

"Estos políticos han tenido muchas oportunidades de 'hacer lo correcto', pero ahora solo están haciendo algo porque temen la rebelión y la fuerza de un movimiento unido y multinacional," dijo Jess Jude, uno de los once activistas arrestados.

"Y vemos que Trump continúa con sus belicosos ataques contra nuestro movimiento, incluyendo el gracioso perdón del Sherife Joe Arpaio junto con su apoyo a los ataques de la supremacía blanca en Charlottesville. Los días de acción del 11 al 17 de septiembre, tanto en Durham como en todo el país, continuarán la marcha hacia adelante para derribar la supremacía blanca en todas sus formas terroristas."
