Draft ScriptI am calling on behalf of the MTC 8 who were arrested and detained on July 12th It has been almost a year and they have yet to have this resolved. I feel strongly that the charges these 8 are facing be dropped. This was a non-violent protest against an organization that is complicit in needlessly detaining immigrants seeking asylum from poverty and violence. These immigrants have been excluded from the opportunity of legal paths to citizenship. They have been forced to take drastic measures to protect their lives and the lives of their children.
The right to protest is not an offense that should be punished by a drawn out court case, adding strain to their professional and familial lives. These 8 had previously taken appropriate actions through legislative and civic means to communicate their concerns. They did not take this path unthoughtfully but after hearing the need from multiple organizations both locally and from abroad. The decision to invoke their right to protest was fueled by multiple horrific stories of children being removed from their parents who were then detained. In facilities operated by MTC. These eight individuals could no longer sit by and watch MTC continue to build more detention centers. It is time the attorney generals office see true justice would be done be allowing these individuals to resume their lives unencumbered by on ongoing court case.
A silent protest with signs inside the court building hall in Salt Lake City will take place this Thursday, May 9.
