45+ Actions On The Map for March 20 Solidarity Day; SUPPORT ALABAMA AMAZON UNION

On Tuesday, Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley, author of Hammer & Hoe: Alabama Communists During the Great Depression, joined us for a powerful discussion on the historical role that Black workers in the U.S. South have played in ushering in sweeping social change, and how the predominantly Black Amazon workers in Bessemer, Alabama, are today carrying that legacy forward.

We were also honored to be joined by Southern Workers Assembly co-coordinator Saladin Muhammad, who spoke to the critical role of the U.S. South in rebuilding the working class movement today, and the importance of developing workers assemblies, among many other significant points.

What was additionally underscored throughout was the critical need to rally solidarity from every corner of the left and progressive movements around the fight being led by Bessemer workers. The upcoming coordinated day of solidarity on March 20 will be an opportunity to do just that.

Jennifer Bates, a Bessemer Amazon worker and a leader of the fight to win the first U.S. union at the company there, spoke on Wednesday about the grueling conditions inside the warehouse at a U.S. Senate hearing initiated by Senator Bernie Sanders. Although Amazon boasts about paying workers $15 per hour, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is the richest person in the world, and the warehouse workers are subjected to intense and dehumanizing working conditions.

With less than two weeks until the voting on union representation closes, now is the time to redouble our efforts to show and expand the broad movement that is behind the workers there, and to send a strong message to Amazon that not only do we firmly denounce their union-busting and exploitation of their workers — but we are going to continue to organize, we are going to continue to fight, and we are going to continue to build worker power.
