Five-year-old Hind Rajab and five of her family members were riding in a civilian car in the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood, in the southwestern part of Gaza City, attempting to escape the impending Israeli invasion, on Jan. 29, 2024, at around 5 p.m., when they were exposed to direct and repeated fire from the Israel Occupation Forces (IOF).

On the same day, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) also found the bodies of two of its paramedics, Yousef Zaino and Ahmed Al-Madhoun, who were sent to rescue Hind after receiving her telephoned distress call and after conducting the security coordination required by Israeli army forces to allow such missions. According to the audio transcripts of the calls, after the initial blast of bullets, only Hind’s 15-year-old cousin, Layan Hamidah, and Hind were initially left alive. Layan attempted to call the PRCS for help. Her call was also recorded. It was cut short by another blast of fire from Israeli forces, at which point, only Hind’s five-year-old voice could be heard pleading with the PRCS.

This dialogue is reenacted in the film “Voice of Hind Rajab,” a dramatization of the incident. It has also been recorded on at least 17 videos currently on YouTube and heard by millions of people around the world.

Hind’s death and that of her family are far from unique. Israel has slaughtered tens of thousands of unarmed Palestinians over the past few years. IOF soldiers have aimed specifically at children. (U.N. News, June 23, 2026)

Not many of these killings have been so clearly recorded as that of Hind, however, which makes the fact of Hind’s murder reach so many people. Her death shows intent, which causes more people to react and protest.

One example of this was in New York at Columbia University in May of 2024 when students took over Hamilton Hall and renamed it Hind Hall in honor of the young Palestinian girl and to show solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

For most of the past two and a half years, the IOF and the Israeli regime denied its soldiers had even fired on the car. They shifted to acknowledging that their troops had been in the area. Then finally this August they admitted for the first time that Israel’s own forces shot at the vehicle. (TRT World, Aug. 21, 2026)

The Israeli army’s admission has been considered worthless, coming as it does two years after the murder and in light of the fact that the Israeli case before the International Criminal Court is very weak. The U.N. has found Israel guilty of genocide.

All of these findings and accusations have failed to result in any formal governmental punishment of Israeli actions. Any action has come from grassroots and resistance organizations around the world who are operating under conditions where a much larger proportion of the population sympathizes with the Palestinian people, even in the imperialist countries.

As more and more people become aware of Israeli atrocities, they begin to talk to each other and to discover their own power. They begin to find each other and to unite. It takes a long time, but it’s inevitable. The story of Hind and her family has long lasting effects.
