After the democratically elected president of Ukraine was removed in the U.S.-facilitated coup of 2014, the new government proceeded with a crackdown on any signs of opposition by employing the neo-Nazi forces that played a major role in the installment of this right-wing regime.
In Odessa on May 2, 2014, activists promoting moving Ukraine to a federal system with more local control for the provinces were brutally attacked by fascist pro-Kiev forces at the Odessa House of Trade Unions. By official estimates, 46 people were killed, many more were injured, many are still missing. There has never been any real official investigation into the massacre, despite plenty of video recordings that reveal its perpetrators.
The two-year anniversary of that massacre has just been commemorated in Odessa, despite threats of more violence by the fascist groups. Irina Koval of Odessa will talk about the massacre, which has never received an appropriate amount of attention in the U.S. press due to the general media whiteout to cover up U.S. and NATO criminal dealings in the region. She also will report on the ensuing repression of the people in Odessa and their attempts at resistance, including their demand for a real international investigation of the massacre of May 2, 2014.
Irina will be joined by Greg Butterfield, coordinator of the Solidarity with Ukraine Antifascists Committee of the International Action Center, who has written extensively on the U.S. role in the war led by the Kiev government on the Donbass region that rose up to defend itself against this post-coup regime with its openly fascist elements. Greg has just returned from an anti-fascist conference held in Lugansk and will report on the situation in the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.
The event will also feature Joe Lombardo, co-coordinator of the United National Antiwar Coalition. He has been following the anti-NATO movement in Europe and together with Ana Edwards was coordinating the support team for the UNAC delegation to Odessa to oversee the May 2 commemoration earlier this month.
Given that the Kiev regime has been supported by the US financially and militarily, it is crucial that people in the US are aware of the crimes that their tax dollars sponsor and build solidarity networks with the activists in Ukraine.
Sponsored by the
United National Antiwar Coalition
and the International Action Center.
Food and refreshments will be served.
