Here’s why:
- Dec. 9, 2016 marks 35 years since the police tried to execute Mumia on the streets of Philadelphia. He was framed and sentenced to death through the complicity of the FBI, the District Attorney’s Office and the courts.
- Mumia has filed a new legal action based on a recent Supreme Court decision. If successful, Mumia will have new appeals and a new trial, if not dismissal of the charges.
- Mumia and thousands of Pennsylvania prisoners with hepatitis C need our support in their battle to force the PA Department of Corrections to provide life-saving drugs that can cure this deadly disease.
- The water in PA prisons, including SCI Mahanoy where Mumia is housed, is unsafe to drink or bathe in, yet prisoners are being denied sufficient clean water.
- The struggle for Mumia’s freedom encompasses the fight against racist police brutality and legal lynching through the death penalty, frame-up convictions, judicial and prosecutorial misconduct, and mass incarceration – all the horrors of the U.S. capitalist prison system.
- International mass protests prevented Mumia’s execution. These same protests and publicity are needed today to keep him alive and win his freedom.
We urge organizations and individuals from the U.S. and around the world to join together in Philly on December 9, 2016, as part of a renewed campaign to free Mumia Abu-Jamal and to demand:
- Free Mumia, Now! Free all political prisoners!
- Abolish the Racist Death Penalty! End Solitary Confinement!
- End Life Imprisonment without Parole! (Death by Incarceration)
- Quality Health Care for all Prisoners! Hep C Meds for All!
- End Mass Incarceration! No Stop and Frisk!
- Tear Down Philadelphia’s racist Frank Rizzo* statue!
- Solidarity with Black Lives Matter movements!
